Go Mr Eco, go!

Here at SWN we are all going crazy for Mr Eco – Guernsey’s first ever eco-friendly cleaning company, launched to coincide with World Environment Day on the 5th of June. I’ve done a little research and to my surprise it has actually changed my perspective on being ‘green’ at home…

I have been aware for some time that many household cleaning products contain all kinds of chemical criminals, which leave a trail of non-degradable ‘nasties’ in their wake. Many are also produced from precious non-renewable materials. What I hadn’t realised was how much damage these products and other cleaning practices do to me, and my home.

Open a window – quick!

Many cleaning products let off harmful fumes into the air. Once in your lungs they build up and can be responsible for all kinds of allergies and complaints. Also, these toxic materials combine with efficient insulation, which means it’s not uncommon for the air inside your house to be more toxic than the air outside!

Friend or foe?

Antibacterial cleaners are supposed to protect us against germs including Swine flu and food poisoning. The truth is, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has found they don’t clean hands any better than soap and water. In addition to this, antibacterial soaps force bacteria to evolve into “super germs” capable of surviving and resisting this chemical onslaught.

Many household cleaners – including washing powder – can also irritate the skin and eyes.

Ready to make the change?

The pollution of our planet, destruction of our wildlife and harm to my health is reason enough for me to choose Mr Eco. All the added health benefits of using eco-friendly products has really changed my perspective on the issue. For me it’s not just about world preservation any more – it’s about self-preservation too!
