New Media vs. graphic design
Can I let you in on a secret? When it comes to new media, graphic design is where it starts. Say it out loud and it sounds almost old fashioned. But remember – all designers, web developers, creative directors, animators and illustrators are graphic designers at heart.
Regardless of the media, graphic design is simply:
“…the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the product (design) generated.” (Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia.)
Typography, colour theory, photography, illustration, animation…
Ideas and messages can be brought to digital life through a stunning choice of media. Graphic design is what brings all of the elements together to make them work. Bad composition ruins good artwork in any media. Graphic design – or good graphic design – is therefore synonymous with success.
The truth is there is no “new media vs. graphic design”
In this digital hungry world, you can’t successfully have new media without graphic design. So to make it work, combine new media with graphic design for a results-focused marriage made in heaven.
What are your thoughts on new media and graphic design?
Do you think of yourself as a web designer or graphic designer? Is the digital world the only way forward? Will it leave graphic design in the dust – or will graphic design always be a part of your creative mix? We’d love to know what you think.
